Role of Industry in Hypertension of Ecomony

If the American Society for Hypertension hoped to devise an expanded definition of the condition that would be scientifically  and ethically defensible, it sure picked the wrong way to do it. Virtually every key step in its efforts to redefine hypertension from mere high blood pressure to a broader syndrome has been financed by pharmaceutical companies that would gain by selling drugs to more people.

 Hypertension, which is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease, is currently defined as a blood pressure reading of 140/90 and above. Some 65 million  Americans have high blood pressure by that definition. But 59 million more are considered pre-hypertensive, which means they have blood pressure readings of at least 120/80. The new concept being debated within the society would move about half of these into the hypertension category based on other risk factors.

With the rise of machines and the industrial ventures, the number of people having hypertension has increased. Industries have crowded all around major cities with some even penetrating near the residential areas. The air is not fresh and clean as it was used to be, creating health problems. The employers of the companies are overburdened with the ever increasing workload and the tensions of finishing job within the deadlines, leaving a negative impact on their health. The swarm of multinational companies has further intensified the competition in this wild goose chase.

 
The rationale is that simple blood pressure measurements fail to identify all the people who may need to be treated to prevent heart attacks and strokes. So the expanded definition would throw in various cardiovascular risk factors, biochemical markers and signs of organ damage that could, collectively, justify a diagnosis of hypertension even if blood pressure was too low to meet the current definition. The proposed definition does not recommend any specific treatment, but it would seem likely to expand the use of medications. 

While this approach has merit in principle, some complain that the new definition is not grounded on solid scientific evidence and inevitably bears the taint of financial ties with the industry. No guidelines produced this way will have much credibility.

 

What’s wrong in calling India a country of Rapists?

A couple of Weeks ago, there was a strong backlash on the comments posted by the American on a social networking website. She had written "It's the vegetarians that are doing the raping, not the meat eaters - this place is just so bizarre." If one thinks over for a while on this comment, one shouldn't find anything wrong in it.

Why do we Indians get so defensive if someone of foreign says something about us. Even though if it is correct. Lets face it, Truth is Bitter and damn it is. I don’t find anything wrong with the statement. And if you are  reading newspaper or watching TV news regularly, you should admit it too.

One should not be oblivious of the fact that India is a country with highest number of REPORTED Rapes in this country. As per Wikipedia, 24,206 rape cases were registered in India in 2011 alone.  A new case is reported every 20 minutes. Take not of the word “Reported”. The number of unreported rapes is out of my imagination. And all these numbers do not include the Marital Rapes that always takes a backseat when the brutal rapes are already enough to handle.

So clearly, backed by the facts, India stands out PROUDLY as being a nation of rapists. Then why do we Indians become so defensive when someone points a figure. Why cannot we stand the truth and face it upfront.

Every newspaper, every news channel is full of rapes. If rapes weren't enough, we have gone a step with gang rapes. It not one individual but communities involved. There have been cases where sexual assaults against have been openly endorsed by local communities, panchayats and Khaps. A latest case doing the rounds is that of a tribal girl in West Bengal.

 Rapes and sexual crime have become so common that even police take it lightly and many times advise victims not to report such matters. If this is what a large portion of population think, isn't saying India a country of Rapists right.

It’s time to stand up and admit what is right.

Should Human Cloning be Permitted?

I cannot conceive the reason as to why blame the knowledge, why to find fault with science and its wonderful discoveries. Genome Mapping and eugenics are not responsible if a Pandora's box of problems related to ethics, morality and biological issues has opened up. Knowledge is knowledge. It is power. Its use or misuse is man's responsibility. It is upto you whether you use it for good or for evil. It is, in itself neither a boon nor bane. In the name of ethics morality and humanity you cannot stop the onward march of science. And I may assure you that soon we may have the first human clone. Many specialists and experts have expressed in this field their desire to clone a human. Man cannot remain content with cloning of Dolly the sheep, AND I the monkey etc.

I am also in favour of human cloning. I am well aware of the risks and dangers involved in it. People are afraid that this knowledge may be used for the benefit of the rich and the affluent only because it is so costly. They also say that it would be sheer madness for man to try to play God and change the genetic code as he pleases. But the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. Would you banish fire because it may burn your houses to ashes? The DNA research has opened up many new avenues and opportunities for all of us. It helps us a lot in developing new drugs and vaccines to fight with deadly diseases and improving our health-care' system. We are badly in need of another green revolution which is possible only with the help of plant genetics. I don't say that the fear of ecologists who say that it could have catastrophic effects on environment and that the genes of new crops could pollinate other plants wrecking fundamental changes in wild life and create super weeds which are resistant to herbicides. Better we devise means against these dangerous possibilities instead of banning cloning and related researches.

Growing water Problem in India

Depleting Water Resources and Need for New Water Policy in India

Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh in his address to the nation on the eve of 62nd Independence Day stressed on the need of having a comprehensive national policy on conservation of water. The ground water resources are being replenished at a drastic rate, which in future will leave the nation on the mercy of monsoon and in a dry year like the current one water scarcity is bound to happen. In months of May and June, Indore faced huge scarcity of water. Municipal corporation employees were beaten up after which the police had to escort water tankers. These incidents will become more common in the coming years in absence of a national policy.

The policy formulation should address following issues

• Depleting underground water resources
• Changes in rainfall pattern
• Global warming
• Interstate water disputes


Depleting underground water reserves is most severe in Punjab & Haryana, largely because of the multi paddy crops sowed over the years. Multi paddy crops means more than one paddy crop in the same year in the same field. This was ultimately banned after a lot of hue and cry. Water level has fallen below 200 feet and farmers have resorted to submersible water pumps. The government should encourage alternate kharif crops and ensure adequate MSP and procurement. Agriculture has largely been limited to wheat and rice. Punjab over the years has witnessed GDP growth which was lower than the national average and in such a situation other crops may well be a blessing in disguise. The same practice of multi paddy crop has been started in Tarai region i.e. Udham Singh Nagar District in Uttarakhand and parts of bordering districts of Pilibhit, Barielly and Rampur in U.P. We Indians have developed a habit of waking up only in crisis, the authorities in these districts have turned a blind eye towards this development and it is only when water level will fall drastically that they will come into action.

Role of Teachers in Nation Building

The teacher is one of the pillars of the society and the country. Without good teachers, no country can progress. The importance of teachers in the life of a nation cannot be overlooked. The teacher influences the immature minds of-the youth. He treats and moulds the young mind into various forms. The future of the nation is built him through the process of education. As nation which tries to march ahead on the road to progress must do so with the help of able teachers. A nation cannot afford to leave its future in the hands of incompetent teachers. According to a philosopher, "The world of tomorrow will be born from the schools of today." Thus the teacher is very significant as the builder of the nation.

India is known for its great teachers. In the past, there were highly competent teachers. They were held in high esteem by all sections of the society. Even the kings and rulers paid great respect to them. They used to look up to their teachers for guidance and advice in the hour of crisis. In those days, teachers were the true benefactors of society. They were the trustees of common welfare. History is full of examples that great decisions of vital importance were taken by kings on the advice of their teachers or gurus. Alexander, the Great was indebted to his teacher, Aristotle for the knowledge and advice given to him from time to time. Thus teachers in the past enjoyed a place of esteem and reverence.


However, those times have passed. Now the teacher does not hold as much esteem as he did in the past. Teachers have lost their old glory. Now they are looked down upon in society. Their economic condition is also miserable. We know that our country is economically backward and the standard of the masses is very low. Burin this system, the teacher stands on the lowest rung of the ladder and plays a pivotal role in building of a nation or a country.

Moreover, the nature of society has changed. We have become materialistic. In this society, only those people command respects that have power and money. Thus an illiterate minister gets more respect than a highly qualified and scholarly teacher. The society of the past which respected teachers has vanished. The poor teacher does not enjoy much prestige in the society of today. The proliferation of private schools, which are merely teaching shops, is another reason of the decline of a teacher's prestige. These schools employ teachers at very low salaries and the teachers cannot give his best to the students. The teacher suffers in many other ways also. A person who fails in getting a job and is rejected by his employers, blames his teachers for his own failures. In this way also, the teaching profession has been disgraced. As less attention is paid to education these days, the teacher has also lost prestige.

There is a great dissatisfaction and frustration among teachers. Working conditions in schools and colleges are appalling. It is very sad that the persons in charge of education are themselves quite ignorant. They look down upon teachers as mere employees and nothing else. In such conditions, the teacher feels helpless and frustrated. 

 

To some extent, teachers are also to be blamed for this state of affairs. Many teachers also look upon their duty as a service only. In the present time many incompetent teachers get jobs through bribery or approach. Such teachers do not build the society; they destroy it. They mar the future of their students. Such teachers indulge in mal practices. They form unions and ignore the teaching work. They do not have any rapport with students. They exploit students for their own selfish purposes. Such teachers are responsible for spoiling the image of the whole teaching community. 

 

However, the fact remains the teacher is the builder of society. Teacher has a very important roll in nation building. If a nation ignores its teachers it soon finds itself on the path of decline.
